Take Me Out to the Ballgame

We have now "survived" 2 t-ball games..and we are all getting better each time. I am starting to relax and just laugh at the show and Tyson is getting more brave each game. At the first game he was pitifully scared/shy. He would not even hold the bat! The coach helped him hit and then he walked the bases...slowly. Like so slow that players hitting after him passed him. But at least he was out there! For that game the coaches did not call anyone out. During our second game outs were called (although everyone gets to hit...just if you are tagged out you sit down). So...Tyson's first time up to bat he hit it and walked very slowly to first base. Now most of the time kids were able to make it to first base easily because the field players are not yet good at throwing, catching, and tagging the base. However, when the runner moves like a turtle, the opponents have multiple tries to tag the base. You guessed it...Tyson was out at first! At first I was worried that he would either be happy/relieved to be out so that he was done "running" or that he would be too embarrassed to try again. But, my boy rallied! I told him that if he did not RUN they "get him" out! His next two times at bat he RAN!! Now it was not a very athletic run, but he ran!! We were all so proud!

Checkered Coat or Chicken Coop

When Michael and I were young we would often "invent" lyrics to songs if we didn't know them. One particular bit of silliness was in the song "Sit Down You're Rocking the Boat" (Don Henley).Part of the song:
The people all said sit down
Sit down you're rockin the boat
Cause the devil will drag you under
By the sharp lapels of your checkered coat
Sit down Sit down
Sit down you're rockin the boat

Well we would sing it as "Cause the devil will drag you under..the sharp edges of your chicken coop." You know because that's what that devil does!

As grown ups we have laughed about this great song and we still sing it the same way. Well now we have our very own chicken coop! Michael is all about making the Smith house self -sustaining so he came and helped us build it. We used mostly materials we already had and it was lots of fun building together. Our "baby chicks" have arrived: 2 Buff Orbingtons "Sunshine" and "Deliliah"; 2 Golden Reds "Henrietta" and "Harvetta"; 2 Black Sex Link "Foxy" and "Beyonce"; 2 Barred Rock "Pat Pat" and "Miss Kimmy"! I love them! Some are older so they already live in the coop and should lay eggs in about 5 weeks. 4 of them are living in my garage! Every day of adulthood it seems something happens that I never imagined! Now let's just hope that the devil does not drag me under our chicken coop!

This picture does not do justice to how dirty Juel was...they both looked like they were one of the lost boys. But oh boy did they have fun!

Farm-life babies!

Mommy's Day

Mother's Day was a great day full of kisses and sweetness. We went to church-wearing our roses-and then had lunch together. We also enjoyed a delicious meal prepared by Michael the night before. He was home all weekend working on a fun project (another post).

New shoes from Michael (for me too!!)
 A "Gee" card
Sweetness...cards and window sill pretties!

Saying goodbye to the beloved teacher!

Well...I should have known. Although the thought of endless summer days is always appealing, every single year I find myself sad for the school year to end! (Now teacher friends, don't get me wrong. I am READY for summer vacation. There are children with whom I need to part ways. I am "over it" with paperwork.) However, I am always sad to leave my "children." We become a family. I spend more waking hours with them some days than their own parents. And in just a few weeks, they will no longer be "mine." Oh my first years of teaching were flooded with tears over the little lives that I had been privileged to teach. I am now much more ready for that magic date in June, yet I still feel the now familiar pinch in my heart when the time approaches for me to say goodbye.

All of this I know. It has become as much as a part of my teaching as planning for each holiday. But today I was caught off guard when we had to say goodbye to Tyson's first ever school teacher. She has been so wonderful. Tyson says "thank you God" for her every night. He pretends to be her, saying "mommy get your mind on me." Parents were invited to spend the last few minutes of the day in the classroom. The children sang their songs and were presented with certificates. The proud faces were priceless. Soon it was time to gather our things, hug classmates, and bid farewell to Mrs. Dena. She cried... I cried. Sweet Mrs. Dena, we will forever have our "minds (and hearts) on you" as being such a treasured preschool teacher.
